It’s estimated that 75% or more of non-organic processed foods in the U.S. are contaminated with genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The Organic Consumers Association (OCA), a Minnesota, USA-based non- profit consumer advocacy group, recently asked consumers to nominate stores, CSAs, Co-ops and farmers markets that are doing a good job of informing customers about the products they offer; store policies for stocking GMO products and for labeling them; and to know how GMO-conscious grocers work with manufacturers to limit the GMO products in their stores. From 156 nominees presented by 363 consumers OCA selected 12 winning grocers for leading the natural food industry by working with manufacturers and local producers to transition to non-GMO ingredients and by advocating for GMO labeling: Berkshire Organics Market & Deli, Dalton, MA; Dad’s Organic Market, Saskatoon, SK; Good Earth Natural Foods, Fairfax, CA; Jimbo’s…Naturally! San Diego, CA; MOM’s Organic Market, Baltimore, MD & Washington, DC.; Native Sun Natural Foods Market, Jacksonville, FL; Natural Grocery Company, El Cerrito & Berkeley, CA; Nature’s Food Patch Market & Cafe, Clearwater, FL and Ocean Beach People’s Organic Food Co-Op, San Diego, CA.
