BioFach America Latina, along with ExpoSustentat, will be cancelled for 2011 and re-launched in 2012 with a fresh concept and under the management of NürnbergMesse Brasil, the new subsidiary of NürnbergMesse in Latin America. The two long-standing partners of BioFach América Latina and ExpoSustentat, NürnbergMesse GmbH and Planeta Orgânico, have agreed to end their partnership, clearing the way for each to concentrate on their core business.
“BioFach América Latina is in excellent hands with NürnbergMesse Brasil,” says Petra Wolf, a member of the management board at NürnbergMesse. “Our Brazilian colleagues are exhibition professionals with many years of know-how.”The Brazilian subsidiary already organizes seven of its own events in São Paulo in the pharmacy, cosmetics, glass technology, kitchen and bathroom sectors, as well as pet and veterinary supplies, with an annual turnover of just under nine million euros in 2010 and a staff of 28.“We are looking forward to the new task and will develop a new concept for BioFach América Latina with enthusiasm and energy,” says Ligia Amorim, managing director of NürnbergMesse Brasil in São Paulo.
Planeta Orgânico entered the organic sector through developing the first website for organic products in Brazil in 2000. Beginning in 2003, the firm organized BioFach América Latina and ExpoSustentat in partnership with NürnbergMesse. Maria Beatriz Martins Costa and Rosina Cordeiro Guerra, managing directors of Planeta Orgânico, will now focus on promoting it as a “green hub” in a country that will host some of the most important mega-projects in the next few years.
Rio de Janeiro, where Planeta Orgânico is headquartered, will welcome five mega-events in a row, beginning with Rio+20 and the Earth Summit 2012, followed by the (soccer) World Cup in 2014 and the Olympic Games in 2016. The supply chain associated with these events will be the focus of the “green hub” that Planeta Orgânico has developed over the past years.
With the fourth-largest area of organic production in the world (1.8 million hectares), Brazil is well in line with the global trend for organic agriculture. The Brazilian government aims to create a sustainable World Cup for the world to watch in 2014, associating the home of football with concern for the environment. The concept will also apply to the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
Exports of Brazilian organic produce are predicted to surge, worth about $250 million U.S. for 2010 – the figure estimated by the OrganicsBrasil Project (IPD/Apex-Brasil). Export growth of around 20% per annum over the last five years has resulted in a boost for the industry and its consolidation in the country, ushering in a phase of flat-out expansion and staking its claim on the internal and external markets.
Today, organic agriculture is found in every Brazilian state, with family-based farming accounting for the main production modality. Small producers stand to benefit most from the Brazilian government’s decision to stimulate organic farming.
